"Rose, come on, let's play!" Tiger called to his sister as he batted a jingleball back and forth. The stump-tailed orange and black kit smacked the fun noisemaker in his sister's direction, and the peach-colored female with black markings whacked the toy in an unrelated direction, giving Tiger a sad look with her gray eyes.
"I don't feel like playing right now, brother..." she meowed, jumping onto the windowsill and looking outside at the street.
The sides of Tiger's lips lowered slightly in a feline's frown as his ears folded back in disappointment. He walked to the window, jumping up to join his sister and nudging her.
"What's wrong, sis?" he asked. "Are you still thinking about mom?"
"Of course I am!" she meowed loudly with displeasure, black ears laying back against her head. "Don't you still worry about her!? She disappeared when we were young kits! What if she's hurt?"
Tiger's gray eyes held a sad look, tail drooping as much as it could with so little to work with. He lowered his head and looked at her, licking her shoulder affectionately before speaking, "And what if she simply ran away to become a stray... I don't want to think that she would do that, but I've heard stories from the TV about mother cats abandoning their kits...."
"You need to stop watching that thing with Michael." Rose wrinkled her nose in disgust. "Jason and I play outside.... You should too."
Rose wished she could take back her words when she saw her brother shudder and look away.
Less than a year ago, Tiger had been playing in the front yard with Jason and Michael, the Twolegged kits that cared for them, when a neighbor's dog had broken into the yard and bitten Tiger's tail clean off before attacking Michael, who had jumped in the middle of the scene to protect his cat. Since then, both boys had taken habit to sitting inside all day, Tiger scarred with a missing tail, and Michael tormented with a mauled face that was doomed to never fully heal back to the way it had once been.
"Please, don't bring that up." Tiger begged just before Jason and Michael ran up and picked up the kits, running off with them and hiding them in the boys' closet, slamming the door in the kits' faces.
"what's going on!?" Rose meowed loudly in displeasure, climbing over unknown objects in the dark. Even with her night-vision, it was hard to see in the pitch-black closet.
Just as frightened, Tiger began to scratch at the wooden door, causing Jason to open it and push the kits further back. He looked up suddenly and tried to shut the door, but his father's hand grasped the edge of the door and forced it open. The large Twolegged reached in and grabbed Tiger and Rose, who began meowing and growling in disagreement.
Jason and Michael ran after their father as he took Tiger and Rose into the kitchen and dropped them in a cardboard box. Neither boy was able to verbalize objection, since Michael's injury had damaged his vocal cords, and Jason was born mute.
"Where is he taking us?" Rose fearfully asked her brother as the box was placed in the back seat of the car and driven away from the house.
"I don't know... But I'm gonna try and get us out." he said, pushing at the box flaps with his paws. But it was simply in vain, for the Twolegged father had placed his suitcase atop the box to keep it shut.
After a while, the two kits curled up beside each other, growing tired from all their fretting. When the car at last stopped, the kits were awoken by the jerking motion of the box getting yanked out of the car and dropped to the ground. They could hear the car drive away, though the box remained closed.
"Hello?" Rose called out, trying to open the box. Again, it was pointless, thanks to a rock on the box.
"I guess we'll just have to wait." Tiger said to his sister, still laying down.
She curled up beside him. "I'm scared... where are we?"
"I don't know, but I'll keep you safe." Tiger began to lick his sister's fur affectionately, purring softly to comfort her.
A few minutes later, the two kits could hear voices.
"This is where the Twolegged visited yesterday.." Rose heard a cat meow.
"It seems as if it left something here this time..." Tiger sat up as the pawsteps grew closer.
"Hey!" he cried out, pawing clawlessly at the side of the box.
"It talks!!" a third cat hissed.
"Relax, Squirrelpaw." The second cat said. "It's not talking, but what's inside is."
Rose ducked down as one of the cats leaned on the top of the box, pushing the rock to the ground. Tiger took the opportunity to push on the box flaps, finally opening the box. The sudden motion made a small dark-ginger kit outside the box to hiss defensively, her fur puffed up.
"Squirrelpaw!" snapped a dark brown tabby tom, batting the ginger on the head with his paw. "Be nice, it's just a kit!"
"It's a kittypet, to be exact." a fire-colored tom mewed softly, sniffing Tiger. Rose peeked out nervously, being greeted with a sniff-over as well.
"I guess the two of you were abandoned.. Your twolegged master must be rather cruel." The fire-pelted cat licked them in an attempt to comfort them.
"No way!" Tiger mewed defiantly. "Michael's the nicest kid ever!"
"And so is Jason!" Rose piped up, a slight frown visible in her feline lips. "It's their father that left us here!"
"I see.. well, come out of that box and come with us, why don't you?"
The two kits popped out of the box, the one called Squirrelpaw staring in amazement at Tiger's stump tail.
"You have a rabbit's tail!" she exclaimed, tail swishing with excitement.
Tiger's ears folded back, pressing against his head. "Don't... talk about it." he growled deeply.
"It's a sensitive subject.." Rose said gently, pressing her muzzle against her brother's neck.
"Brother and sister?" the brown tabby asked. "Do you have names?"
"Yes.." Rose said, looking at the tabby. "My name's Rose, and this is my brother, Tiger."
"Such simple names.." Squirrelpaw tilted her head to the side.
"Twoleggeds are very simple creatures when it comes to names." the fire-furred cat purred. He looked at the two kittypets. "My name is Firestar, I'm the leader of a family of cats called ThunderClan. This is one of our warriors, Brambleclaw, and my kit, Squirrelpaw."
"Nice to meet you." Rose purred.
"Come, Tiger and Rose.." Firestar said, turning. "We'll take you back to ThunderClan."
The two kits looked at each other, then nodded in agreement, following the three cats.

"What is this, Firestar, are you bringing rouges into the clan now!?" growled a long-haired white tom as the group approached.
"Hush, Cloudtail." Firestar said. "These are two abandoned kittypets. Tell everyone there is a meeting tonight."
Cloudtail looked at the kits with displeasure, but ran off anyway. A short while later, cats from every hiding spot were coming out to surround Firestar, who was now atop a large rock. Even elders, who were curious as to what the sudden meeting was about.
"My fellow ThunderClan cats!" Firestar announced, Rose and Tiger at the base of the stone. "We will be hosting two kittypet kits for a while. They have been abandoned by their Twolegged master and have no place else to go."
"Abandoned!?" the word was thrown back and forth between cats in a wave of whispers.
"They have been named Rose and Tiger by their Twoleggeds, and so that is what we shall call them for now." Firestar went on. "But, should they decide to officially join the clan and follow the warrior's code, then they shall be issued new names. If they refuse the code, then I shall assist them in finding a new home. These kits are young and healthy, and should StarClan permit it, I would be happy to make them new additions to our clan.. if, of course, they so wish." He glanced down at the kits, then looked at the group as a cat shouted out.
"No!" yelled a tom. "Have StarClan test their worth!! If StarClan doesn't approve, then they shouldn't be here at all!!"
The cry was followed by approving meows, and soon Firestar had to yell to silence them. "Very well then!!" he shouted, then lifted his head to the stars above them. "Oh StarClan.. you have heard my claim, and the claims of these cats.. Please, test these young kits. Let them prove their worth."
There was a long moment of silence, and then a large owl came swooping down, claws outstretched. Cats scattered, but Rose was too frightened. Just before the owl could grab her, Tiger hissed loudly, tackling the bird and clawing feathers from its body.
"Leave my sister alone!"
The owl fought back, and as Tiger received a claw mark across his face, Rose ran up, biting the bird's leg.
Squirrelpaw jumped up and down in excitement and wanted to join them, but Brambleclaw wouldn't let her.
"Let them be tested on their own." He whispered.
The owl bit into Rose's back, forcing her to let go, then picked her up and flew off.
"ROSE!" Tiger yelled, running after it. He jumped, hopping off the trunk of a tree, then off another nearby trunk, onto a branch, where he hopped to higher branches until finally... he leapt with all his leg strength toward the owl, clawing its wing. The bird dropped Rose, and she hit the ground with a thud. With the owl gone, cats ran up and gathered around Rose and Tiger, who was trying to wake his sister up.
"Rose, come on.." he mewed, nudging her. "Say something..."
Firestar walked up, a sad look in his eyes, tail drooping. "I'm sorry.." he said, licking Tiger's ear sympathetically. "But I guess StarClan didn't find her worthy enough.."
Tiger's tail and ears drooped, then pressed against his body angrily, tail twitching from side to side. "Well then StarClan is stupid." he growled, glaring. His words caused a collective gasp and angry growls in response.
"Don't talk about what you don't know, kit!" Cloudtail snapped. "You know nothing of StarClan!"
"What right would anyone have to take my only relative from me!?" Tiger hissed, baring his teeth in a snarl.
"Ti..ger..." Rose's voice drew Tiger's attention instantly away from his fight.
"Rose!!" Tiger exclaimed with shock, his gray eyes wide. "Y-you're alive!?"
Rose's eyes opened slowly, looking at her brother. "I.. won't leave you... ever.."
"It seems we were wrong." Firestar said, eyes glittering with joy. "StarClan must approve after all."
"I think StarClan is simply taking pity on this tomkit." Cloudtail wrinkled his nose. "Judging by his tail, he needs it."
"And so what if that's the case!?" Tiger said. "I'm not asking for your pity, or anyone's pity. I don't want pity from anyone. Yes, I'm missing my tail, but what of it!? I don't see any evidence of you fighting to protect someone you love!"
Rose looked at him with mild confusion, but didn't question it. Firestar picked the she-kit up and carried her Cinderpelt.
"I'll take good care of her, don't worry." Cinderpelt said to Tiger before picking Rose up by the scruff and carrying her away.
